The real cost of car registration in Germany 2026
"How much does it cost to register a car in Germany?" is one of the most-asked questions we get from non-resident buyers — and the honest answer is: it depends on the vehicle. Below is every line item, updated for 2026.
One-time fees (paid to the Zulassungsstelle)
The Zulassungsgebühr itself is modest — typically €27 to €60 depending on which Berlin district processes the registration. Plates run another €25 to €40 from the embossing service next door to most Zulassungsstellen. If you want a personalised plate (e.g. B-EK 188), reservation is €10.20.
KFZ-Steuer (annual vehicle tax)
Germany's vehicle tax is calculated on engine displacement and CO₂ emissions. Rough bands:
- 2.0L petrol: €150 – €250 / year
- 3.0L petrol or V8: €250 – €700 / year
- Diesel: add ~€10/cm³ on top of petrol rates
- EV first registered before 2026: €0 until 2030
Insurance (the variable part)
Liability insurance (Haftpflicht) is mandatory and ranges from €400/year for a small commuter to €1,800+ for a sports car. We broker through AXA and Zurich at the no-claims rate built up by our fleet — which is meaningfully cheaper than a new policy for a non-resident with no German insurance history.

| Service fee (non-resident registration) | €149 setup + €99 / month |
Bottom line
A typical non-resident registering a mid-range car through our service spends around €149 setup + €99/month + ~€500–€1,200/year in insurance + KFZ-Steuer. For high-value cars the insurance side dominates — and that's precisely where our broker rates matter most.
