Register a Car in Germany as a French Resident — Avoid the Malus Ecologique
Le malus vous coute trop cher? The French malus ecologique on a high-emission vehicle can exceed €50,000. Germany charges zero CO₂ penalty at registration. Register your vehicle in Germany and keep it stored near Berlin for European trips.

French malus vs German Kfz-Steuer
The French malus ecologique is a one-time penalty charged at first registration, calculated on CO₂ emissions. Germany has no equivalent — only a modest annual Kfz-Steuer.
| France | Germany | |
|---|---|---|
| Registration CO₂ penalty | Malus ecologique — up to €60,000 for high-emission vehicles (2026 rates) | None |
| Annual road tax | Taxe regionale (carte grise fee) + possible TVS for company vehicles | Kfz-Steuer — typically €200–600/yr |
| Luxury penalty threshold | Malus starts at 118 g/km CO₂ (2026), escalates steeply | No CO₂ penalty at any emission level |
| Year-over-year trend | Malus thresholds tighten and rates increase annually | Kfz-Steuer rates stable |
Malus amounts are vehicle-specific and change annually. Send us the listing for an exact calculation.
Vehicles most affected by the malus
The malus ecologique hits hardest on high-emission vehicles — precisely the cars most often purchased by international clients. A few examples at 2026 rates:
- Porsche 911 Turbo S — malus €40,000+
- Mercedes-AMG G 63 — malus €50,000+
- Ferrari 296 GTB — malus €30,000+
- Lamborghini Huracan — malus €60,000+
- Range Rover V8 — malus €40,000+
- Bentley Continental GT — malus €50,000+
- BMW M3/M4 Competition — malus €15,000+
- Porsche Cayenne Turbo — malus €35,000+
All figures are indicative based on 2026 malus tables. Actual amounts depend on the vehicle's exact CO₂ rating at registration.
The genuine connection requirement
Cross-border registration is not a loophole. French authorities enforce rules against residents primarily using foreign-registered vehicles in France. The vehicle must be genuinely stored in Germany, used from Germany for European trips, and returned to German storage afterwards.
We build the administrative structure so it reflects reality: genuine storage, real insurance, proper documentation and ongoing administration from Germany. Every case is reviewed to confirm the arrangement is defensible.
No paper-only registrations. The vehicle must genuinely be based in Germany — stored, insured and administered here.
Documents a French resident typically needs
Requirements vary by vehicle and registration model. This is an orientation.
- Valid French passport or ID card
- Proof of French residential address (justificatif de domicile)
- Apostilled passport (for own-name registration)
- Notarised power of attorney (Vollmacht / procuration)
- Purchase agreement or dealer invoice
- Existing vehicle documents (carte grise or EU papers)
- Certificate of Conformity (CoC) where available
- Vehicle identification number (VIN)
- eVB insurance confirmation number
- Vehicle tax authorisation (SEPA mandate)
