Ways to register a car in Germany compared (1970)
There are four routes to registering a car in Germany. Which one fits depends on your residency status, whether you have a German eID and how much you value your time. This page is published by GermanCarRegistration; we've kept it factual and neutral.

DIY at the Zulassungsstelle
The cheapest route on paper: you pay only official fees (€26–37 admin + €15–30 plates + €5–10 sticker). The hidden cost is time. Appointments in Berlin, Munich or Hamburg can be 3–6 weeks out, the counter runs in German, and any missing document (wrong SEPA IBAN, expired HU, mismatched name) means a second trip.
i-Kfz online
Since i-Kfz Stufe 4 (Sept 2023), residents with an activated German eID (Personalausweis or eAT) and post-2015 digital vehicle documents can register online in one sitting. It is genuinely fast — but requires hardware and setup that most newcomers don't have. Non-residents cannot use i-Kfz at all.
Dealer registration
Franchised dealers include registration as an add-on for €150–350, mainly for new-car buyers. Convenient if you're buying at the dealership anyway; irrelevant if you're buying privately, importing, or buying used from elsewhere.
Specialist services
A specialist registration service acts as keeper (Halter) with a German address, or attends the Zulassungsstelle for you by Vollmacht. Purpose-built for non-residents and expats who need the car legally registered without moving to Germany first. Costs more than DIY but removes the address, appointment and language obstacles.
