German Car Registration for United States Residents
Yes — as a US resident you can own and drive a German-registered car without living in Germany. Model A lets our Brandenburg UG appear as keeper while you stay legal owner (~5 business days). Model B registers the car in your own name in the Fahrzeugbrief using an apostilled US passport, a notarised power of attorney and proof of US residency. Both are fully lawful under FZV.

Do I have to be a US citizen or just resident to use Model B?
Model B needs proof that you legally reside somewhere — a US utility bill, lease or state ID typically works alongside an apostilled US passport. Citizenship is not the deciding factor; documentable residency is.
Can I use European Delivery from Porsche/Mercedes/BMW with this?
Yes — European Delivery temporary plates expire in 30 days. We take over at the end of the delivery period and issue full German plates under Model A or B so you can continue driving across the EU legally.
What about shipping the car to the US later?
German export documentation (Ausfuhrkennzeichen or full de-registration for containerised export) is handled by our office. Model A ends the keeper relationship cleanly at export; Model B lets you present the vehicle to US customs already in your name.

Do US insurers cover a German-plated car?
No. The policy must be issued by a German insurer to match the registration. AXA and Zurich handle both Model A (fleet) and Model B (individual) policies through our partnership.
Will an EU DL be needed?
