Ausfuhrkennzeichen (export plates)
Red-numbered German plates for driving a car out of Germany after purchase.
Ausfuhrkennzeichen (export plates) are used when a car is bought in Germany and driven abroad. Valid from 15 days to 12 months, cost €30–80 at the Zulassungsstelle plus a specific short-term export insurance. The plate shows a red vertical bar with the expiry date. Common for buyers from Switzerland, UK, Norway, the Balkans and North Africa who collect a used German car and drive it home.
