HU (Hauptuntersuchung)
The mandatory German roadworthiness inspection, commonly called TÜV, due every two years for passenger cars.
HU stands for Hauptuntersuchung, Germany's periodic roadworthiness test. Every passenger car must pass HU every 24 months once it is older than three years. The inspection covers brakes, lights, tyres, emissions and safety-critical components. TÜV and DEKRA are the best-known inspection bodies, which is why many people simply call it 'the TÜV'. A valid HU sticker on the rear plate is required for registration, and driving with an expired HU can invalidate insurance and lead to fines. Non-resident owners can arrange HU through a service while the car is stored in Germany.
