Standschaden

A Standschaden is damage that develops in a vehicle precisely because it stands unused for a long period in German vehicle and storage practice. It is caused by not driving, not by driving. The mechanisms are well documented: tyres take a flat spot and the rubber ages, brake discs corrode where the pads rest against them, the battery discharges and sulphates, fuel ages and can separate, oil drains away from bearing surfaces and leaves them unprotected, rubber seals dry out, and condensation inside the exhaust, engine and cabin encourages corrosion and mould. Rodents are a second category of Standschaden, chewing wiring looms and insulation in cars parked in barns or open sheds. Insurance treatment matters here: Standschaden is generally regarded as wear and consequential damage rather than a sudden insured event, so a normal comprehensive policy will often not pay for it, whereas rodent damage is frequently covered under Teilkasko. The practical defence is a controlled indoor environment with a battery maintainer, correct tyre pressure, periodic movement and fluid checks — which is what a managed storage service exists to provide.
