AXA vs Zurich: Which German Car Insurance Wins for Foreign Owners?

Alexander K.·Updated 8 min

Most German motor insurers will not write a comprehensive policy for a car whose keeper is a small UG holding vehicles for foreign owners. It's a niche risk they don't understand and don't price. In practice, two carriers do the vast majority of foreign-owner cases: AXA and Zurich. This is our honest side-by-side after several hundred placements.

Why only two insurers really play in this space

HUK-Coburg, Allianz Direct, and the standard mass-market carriers pull their underwriting the moment they see a foreign named driver on a keeper-owned vehicle. Their rating engines can't score foreign licences and won't underwrite outside a standard Schufa footprint. Their support desks refuse the call rather than escalate.

AXA and Zurich both maintain a corporate / fleet channel that treats keeper-model cars as fleet risks and handles foreign named drivers as a standard workflow. That's why they're the two carriers we route to.

Premium comparison across five typical cases

Directional 2026 annual premiums for our keeper model, foreign named driver, no German no-claims bonus assumed:

  • VW Golf GTI, expat in France. AXA €1,050 · Zurich €1,140. AXA wins.
  • BMW M3 Competition, UK resident. AXA €2,400 · Zurich €2,180. Zurich wins.
  • Porsche 911 GT3, Swiss resident. AXA €4,900 · Zurich €4,300. Zurich wins for GT cars.
  • Lamborghini Huracán, UAE resident. AXA declined · Zurich €8,400. Zurich only.
  • Mercedes G-Class, US resident. AXA €2,700 · Zurich €2,900. AXA wins.

Pattern: AXA is cheaper on volume cars and SUVs. Zurich is cheaper on high-performance and the only door open on supercars over €200k list price.

Claims experience — the metric that actually matters

Premium is one number. Claims service is the number you actually feel. Our observations from the last two years:

  • AXA — English-language claims desk is genuinely fluent, average settlement offer arrives in 9-14 days, and their preferred body-shop network covers most German cities. Weakness: they're slow to authorise repairs at independent specialists (a real friction on Porsche, Ferrari and Lamborghini).
  • Zurich — Claims triage is slower on first contact (typically 3-5 days to open the file) but they authorise brand-specialist repairs without pushback. Better on total-loss valuations for rare cars — they'll instruct an independent assessor rather than trying to book value.

Named-driver rules, foreign licences, age caps

  • AXA accepts EU, UK, US, Canadian, Australian, Swiss and Japanese licences under a single umbrella. Other jurisdictions need an International Driving Permit alongside. Minimum driver age 21 for standard cover, 25 for cars over 300 hp.
  • Zurich accepts any UN-signatory country's licence with an IDP. Minimum age 23 across the board, 25 for high-performance. Zurich also allows up to four named drivers per policy at no additional premium — useful for family collectors.

Neither carrier honours foreign no-claims bonuses. Both will build up German bonus under our keeper's Schadenfreiheitsklasse over time.

How we actually choose between them for your case

Our internal rule of thumb, refined over hundreds of placements:

  • Volume brand, list price under €70k, driver under 45 → AXA.
  • Performance car, list price €70k-€200k → Zurich.
  • Supercar or hypercar over €200k → Zurich only.
  • Multi-car garage under one policy → whoever gives the better fleet discount, usually AXA.
  • Client with a prior at-fault claim → Zurich, less punitive on recent claims history.

We quote both carriers on every case above €100k list. On smaller cars we quote the one likely to win to save time. Premiums are passed through 1:1 — we don't take a broker commission.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I just insure with HUK or Allianz directly?

Because you're not the keeper on the Zulassungsbescheinigung — our UG is. Standard direct-to-consumer insurers won't write a policy where the keeper is a keeper-service company and the driver is a foreign resident. AXA and Zurich have specific fleet products that do.

Can I keep my UK / French / US no-claims bonus?

No German insurer honours foreign no-claims history. It's the single most annoying thing about the German motor insurance market. What you gain instead is our keeper's German bonus history, which for most cars is already at 65% NCB or better.

What's included in comprehensive cover?

Third-party liability at €100m (mandatory in Germany), collision, theft, fire, glass, animal collision, storm and hail, and 24/7 EU-wide breakdown recovery. Rental car cover and legal expenses insurance are add-ons we quote if you want them.

How much extra for tracked-day cover?

Both carriers offer optional Nordschleife and controlled-track cover. AXA charges roughly 15% of annual premium as an add-on; Zurich charges by the day. Ring-days need to be declared in advance either way.

Do premiums increase after a claim?

Yes, but the increase is absorbed against our keeper's cumulative Schadenfreiheitsklasse, so a single at-fault claim rarely moves your renewal quote by more than 5-8%. A total-loss claim will meaningfully re-rate the vehicle for the next year.
