Before 1 January 2021, a UK resident buying a Porsche in Stuttgart could effectively register it in Germany on the same terms as an EU citizen. That door closed with Brexit. What's left is a narrower set of legal routes — and a lot of confused advice from dealers who haven't updated their playbooks. This is what actually works for UK buyers in 2026.
What Brexit actually changed for car registration
The change wasn't a new German law — it was the loss of Freedom of Movement. Pre-Brexit, a UK national could rent a flat, register on the Meldebescheinigung, and use that address as Halter. Post-Brexit, a UK resident without a visa cannot Meldebescheinigung-register in Germany, cannot open a normal German bank account by default, and cannot pass the residency test insurers require.
The FZV itself is unchanged. The infrastructure UK buyers used to lean on — casual German residence — is gone. That's why the process needs a different shape.
What no longer works
- UK export plates ("H-plates" / red plates). Valid for a short window, insurance is expensive and thin, and the car must exit Germany within days. Useless if you want to keep the car in Europe.
- Registering the car in the UK. Post-Brexit UK import triggers 10% import duty + 20% VAT on the full purchase price for cars under six months old or under 6,000 km. On a €150k GT car, that's up to €45,000 in new tax you didn't budget for.
- A friend's German address. If the friend isn't a genuine keeper, the insurance is void from day one. Every claims lawyer we work with sees this end badly.
- Setting up your own UG. Possible, but you need a German managing director, share capital, notary costs, ongoing accounting, and a Steuernummer. For one car, the maths doesn't work.
What does work: the keeper model for UK buyers
The clean route uses the German Halter / Eigentümer split explicitly:
- You, as UK resident, sign the Kaufvertrag with the German dealer or private seller. You pay the seller directly — no German intermediary touches your money for the vehicle.
- Our Brandenburg UG is entered as Halter on Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I. We arrange AXA or Zurich cover, handle Kfz-Steuer at Hauptzollamt, and post the physical Siegel plates to you.
- The car has full German plates and drives EU-wide with no export limit. No UK import duty, no UK VAT, no re-registration.
Because the Kaufvertrag is between you and the seller, HMRC classifies the car as foreign-owned and located abroad. It doesn't enter the UK, so no import event triggers.
Driving a German-plated car in the UK
A UK resident can drive a foreign-plated car in the UK for up to six months in any twelve-month period under HMRC's Temporary Admission rules, provided the car is registered abroad and the resident's principal place of use is abroad. That's why this model fits weekenders, second-home owners, and international drivers, not commuters.
If your daily driver is going to live at your Surrey address year-round, this is not the right structure — you'll need a UK registration and to pay the import tax. Tell us honestly on WhatsApp and we'll tell you honestly whether the model fits.
Insurance for UK-based buyers
The policy is a standard German comprehensive policy (Vollkasko) written on our UG as keeper, with you named as principal driver. We work with AXA and Zurich because both underwrite named UK-resident drivers on German policies — most other German insurers won't. Premiums are quoted 1:1, no broker markup.
Key covers included: pan-European third-party liability at €100m, comprehensive damage cover, glass, theft, animal collision, and roadside assistance across the EU including the UK.
Frequently asked questions
Can I still Meldebescheinigung-register as a UK citizen?
Only if you already hold a residence permit (Aufenthaltstitel) or Blue Card. Without one, you can't complete the German residence formality — and without that, direct self-registration doesn't work.
Will the UK police accept German plates?
Yes, under the Vienna Convention, provided you're within your six-month Temporary Admission window and the car is genuinely registered and insured in Germany. Carry the Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I and the insurance Grüne Karte at all times.
What about the ULEZ and London congestion charges?
Both charges apply to foreign-registered vehicles. Register the car in the Transport for London auto-pay system with your German plate — it works the same as UK-plated vehicles.
Can I get UK finance for a German-registered car?
UK asset-finance lenders don't lend on foreign-plated cars. You'll need to buy outright, use a foreign-friendly private bank, or use finance from the German dealer's captive lender.
What if I move back to Germany later?
Easy. On termination of our service agreement, we transfer the keeper role to you at the Zulassungsstelle. Same car, same plate (if you want), same insurance transferred onto your name. Takes about a week.
