How the registration works, step by step

  1. Send your vehicle documents

    Day 1

Photos or scans of the current registration papers (or the purchase invoice for a new car), the VIN, your passport and your foreign address. Everything goes through WhatsApp or email — no visit to Germany required.

  2. We check eligibility and quote the case

    Day 1–2

We confirm whether the vehicle can be registered as-is or needs a TÜV/HU appointment and, for non-EU imports, customs clearance. You receive a fixed quote including the foreign-registration surcharge where it applies.

  3. Insurance and eVB number

    Day 2–3

Cover is arranged through our insurance partners AXA or Zurich and passed through at cost. The Zulassungsstelle cannot register a vehicle without the resulting eVB number.

  4. Zulassung at the Kfz-Zulassungsstelle

    Day 3–5

We file the Zulassungsantrag in Brandenburg, register KFZ-Steuer with the Hauptzollamt and have the plates stamped and sealed with the TÜV and registration badges.

  5. Plates and papers delivered

    Day 5

Sealed German licence plates, Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I (Fahrzeugschein) and, depending on the model, Teil II (Fahrzeugbrief) are couriered to your address or handed over in person.

  6. De-registration when you are done

    Any time later

Abmeldung is included in the service fee and takes ~15 minutes remote — you do not travel for it.

German car registration — FAQ

What is German car registration (Zulassung)?

Zulassung is the official process of registering a vehicle with a German Kfz-Zulassungsstelle. The vehicle receives German license plates, a Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I (Fahrzeugschein) and Teil II (Fahrzeugbrief), and becomes liable for KFZ-Steuer.

Can I get German license plates without living in Germany?

Yes — through a registered service provider with a German address. Our Brandenburg UG provides the address of record while you remain the legal owner of the vehicle.

What does German car registration cost?

€500 one-off plus €99 per month, billed as a single annual payment for 12 months upfront — €1,688 in the first year. A vehicle that still carries a foreign registration costs an additional €400 to convert to German papers.

How long does the whole process take?

Model A (company as keeper) typically takes ~5 business days from complete documents to sealed plates. Model B (your own name in the Fahrzeugbrief) takes longer because of apostille and notarisation.

Is German car registration cheaper than registering in other EU countries?

It depends on the vehicle. For high-value cars, motorhomes, and modified vehicles, Germany is often the most predictable jurisdiction — no luxury tax, transparent KFZ-Steuer, and TÜV is internationally recognized.

Do German plates work across the EU?

Yes. German registration grants full EU-wide driving rights under the Vienna Convention. You can drive your German-plated car anywhere in the Schengen area and beyond.

What happens when I sell the car or move?

De-registration (Abmeldung) is included in the service fee and takes ~15 minutes remote. You do not need to travel to Germany for it.

Do I have to pay German income tax if my car is registered in Germany?

Registering a vehicle in Germany does not, by itself, create a German residence or tax residency. Read our guide on car ownership and tax residency for the details. This is general information, not legal or tax advice.
