The Kaiserslautern Military Community is the largest US community outside the United States — and not everyone in it registers their car the same way. These are the situations we regularly assist with:
US civilian employees at Ramstein, Kaiserslautern and the surrounding garrisons who buy a car from a German dealer or private seller.
US contractors working on base who are not covered by the USAREUR registration system and need a civilian German registration.
Retired service members staying in Germany after active duty, whose status no longer includes USAREUR vehicle registration.
Members transitioning out of service who want to keep their German-purchased car on German plates instead of selling or shipping.
Americans living in the Kaiserslautern Military Community without SOFA registration privileges who still want to own and drive a car.
Spouses and dependents whose individual status is not covered and whose case has to be assessed on its own.
If you are active duty or otherwise SOFA-eligible, the base vehicle registry is normally your route. If you are not — or your status is ending — the German civilian system applies:
| USAREUR registration | German civilian registration | |
|---|---|---|
| Who it is for | SOFA-eligible active duty and entitled personnel | Civilians, contractors, retirees, other US citizens |
| Plates | US forces plates | German plates |
| Authority | Base vehicle registry | Local German registration office |
| Insurance | USAREUR-accepted insurers | German-licensed insurer with eVB confirmation |
| Vehicle tax | Handled under SOFA arrangements | German vehicle tax to the German authorities |
| After separation | Privileges typically end | Continues as long as the registration is valid |
This comparison is general information, not legal advice. Your command or the base vehicle registry can confirm your USAREUR eligibility; we assess the German civilian route for your case.
Buying is the easy part: any US citizen can purchase from a German dealer or private seller — in Kaiserslautern, elsewhere in the region or nationwide on platforms such as mobile.de and AutoScout24. What decides whether you can actually drive the car is the registration route that fits your status.
On request, we assist during the buying process by:
GermanCarRegistration is not a vehicle dealership and receives no commission on the car you choose.
When active-duty status ends, USAREUR registration privileges typically end with it. If you are staying in Germany and want to keep your car, the civilian German registration should be arranged before your status changes — otherwise the vehicle may sit unregistered and undrivable in between. Message us with your timeline and we will tell you what is realistic.
Storage during deployment or TDY
Our storage facility is located near Berlin. Instead of leaving your car parked on the street or selling before a deployment, the vehicle goes into the insured hall — and is ready when you are back. Services not listed above, such as maintenance or detailing, are not part of the standard storage arrangement unless separately confirmed for your case.
A car you shipped from the United States can differ from the version supplied for Europe. Before we confirm a registration route, we review CoC availability, European type approval, lighting, emissions documentation, modifications and the applicable TÜV requirements. A modified or US-spec vehicle is not automatically impossible — but it is always individually assessed.
