Digital Nomad Guide: Owning a Car in Europe Legally

The EU rule that catches everyone: a car must be registered in the country where its keeper is tax-resident, and if you spend more than 183 days a year in one country you become tax-resident there. So the Airbnb nomad who spends four months in Lisbon, three in Barcelona, three in Berlin, and two on the road technically has no single tax residence — but individual national police forces don't care about that nuance. They see foreign plates on a car parked for six months and they issue a re-registration order.

Portugal and Italy are particularly aggressive. Both have issued five-figure fines to drivers whose "temporary" foreign-plated cars sat too long.

• Bulgarian or Estonian plates. Popular in nomad forums, but insurance is thin, no comprehensive cover on newer vehicles, and every western European country now flags Sofia-plated luxury cars as red-flag registrations.
• Long-term rental. €900-1,500/month for a mid-range car; €3,000+ for a GT car. Great for six months, financially insane for two years.
• Perpetual export plates. German Ausfuhrkennzeichen last 30 days maximum. Renewing them from abroad is not a thing.
• Registering under a partner's address. Works until the relationship ends or the partner moves. We've cleaned up several of these.

German plates give a nomad three legal advantages no other jurisdiction matches:

• Full EU driving rights indefinitely under the Vienna Convention — no 6-month cap, no re-registration.
• Highest respect from other EU police forces. German-plated cars get waved through spot-checks that would stop a Bulgarian plate.
• Insurance that actually covers you EU-wide, including in the UK and Switzerland, on a single policy.

• You've been in one country continuously for 18+ months. You're not a nomad, you're an expat — get local plates.
• You're planning to use the car for paid rideshare or delivery. Commercial use needs a commercial policy structure and often local registration.
